I have just bought my first jag 1991 facelift XJS 4.0. Love the car but the first bill to put it right (mostly suspension & brakes ) £1500 including service. It is genuine in mint condition inside and out with FSH, but I guess the previous owner had not looked after it properly. Is this about par for the course? I would be pleased to hear of any similar experience.

I am on my third E-Type. First two were both 1964 coupes. Currently finishing a 5 1/2 year effort on a 1967 Series 1 (LUMPS)coupe. I believe the English coachwork design on the Series 1 E-Type is at the top of the list for beauty. "There are many cars on the world's highways, but only a select few deserve the title of AUTOMOBILE...a Jaguar E-Type happens to be one of them".

Having just replaced the first of my rear lamp assembly outer lens I offer the following info:-
a. Be careful when chipping away the outer lens as the bits are very sharp and travel a reasonable distance.
b. Long nose pliers used in a twisting action removes the remainder of the outer lens from the deep grove, final pieces being chipped away with screwdriver.
c. On reassembly place the coloured inner lenses on the inside of the new outer lens.
d. Run the adhesive into the groove in the reflector assembly and with the new outer still upside down lower lens assembly into groove and allow to dry.
P.s. Once again easy but as usual, not a 5 minute job.

Hello, I just bought my first jag. 1954 XK120 FHC. It's a barn special having been stored for about 14 years. It's all complete and ready to drive except for the head needing reassembly. If anyone has any insight into this car I'd love the advice. I'm wondering about what to do to it before I drive (new fluids, etc). Also does anyone have any suggestions about electrical upgrades.
Thanks for any help I can get. It's a beautiful car and I want to take care of her as she deserves.

Just turned in my 2000 XJR sedan for a (ugh) 2001 Lincoln Town Car. I really miss the Jag but my wife would have no part of it. All is not lost, however, since I am deep into a project of building a replica of the XJ13, a real car that is, not a miniature. I would love to trade "war stories" with anyone out there who has done or is doing a similar project. I'm not sure this is the correct venue for such a search but given the popular notion that Jaguar enthusiasts are on the lunatic fringe, I thought I would give it a go.

I do not own a Jag (yet) but get occasionally a chance to take out a mint 1994 XJ 40 4.0S owned by my father. Driving it is really a treat! The car can only be described as graceful and charming. We reside some 200 kilometres south of the Polar Circle, so it could just be one of the northernmost Big Cats in Europe. Mainly due to icy roads winter use is best avoided but the May-October period with its white summer nights is just sheer fun. I am planning to buy a Mk3 XJ6 when the right car comes along. They are beautifully engineered and for the time being somewhat underrated. An E-type would also be extremely appealing (the early versions in particular) but they are a bit too dear for the time being. Enjoyable touring to all Jag fans !

Can anybody help? I have a 3.8 MkII and am wondering:
(1) For winter rallying I have been using Michelin 185/15 XMS tyres - anybody got any better ideas?
(2) Should I or should I not retro-convert the engine to "Coombs" specification as detailed in Thorley's book (if he reads this I'd be grateful for his views) - Engine needs a top-end rebuild anyway but am concerned that if I uprate car will suffer [a] sensitive engine (needs to be robust for the rallying) and [b] really unbearable fuel consumption.
Any views/experiences would be very welcome.
(excellent site!)
(3) If you are still reading this: hard or soft suspension for driving on European alps snow?

Down here in cowboy land nobody knows diddly about Jaguars. So I am reaching across the pond for some help. My 1985 Vanden Plas (straight 6) has hot air pouring into the interior and I can't turn it off. The a/c was inoperable when I bought the car and I have not had the chance to fix it yet. That's not so bad, but to have the heater on is unbearable. It get's real hot in South Texas, summer is coming and I am slow roasting in my car. Any suggestions?

Help!!
I run a "nice" 89 sov and have just had a disaster, I heard a strange sound from my lh front wheel and a tug on the wheel. I stopped and got towed home, on investigation I discovered my outer bearing had destroyed itself, I cannot
remove what is left of the bearing it looks like it has welded itself to the stub axle! Can the stub axle be removed?. I have all the manuals I can find and none seem to deal with this. I have access to a good machine shop
Any info would be helpful (car looks sad on driveway)
With Thanks Peter Haynes

We have 2 Jaguars. I drive the 1989 XJS convertible and the wife drives the 2000 4.0 S-Type. Although more fun to drive, the '89 does have it's problems.... primarily overheating. Suggestions? Has anyone ever tried a larger radiator, larger volume waterpump, larger fan, etc.
Here in Texas, temps above 100 degrees farenheit are common in the summer and it rarely freezes in the winter.
Jaguar seems to have overcome most problems with the later models. It's truly a pleasure to drive both!

Just thought I'd look at the site as I'd spoken to Terry Dye earlier.
Very good site and yes Terry I've printed out the form to send for my membership.
Looking forward to meeting the guys who asked for my help and assistance at Bomanor Hall last year in Leicestershire and to seeing everyone at the Donington meeting [hopefully in an e-type?]
One other quick question is what ever happened to the 2.4 Mk1 racers? I know Pat Callis put a 3.8 lump in his, but why doesn't someone build one as Pat's could keep up with most of the Mk2's in pre 65 days and Mr. Lloyd used to be able to do 59's round Mallory! Just thought I'd ask as the sound of a 2.4 reving to 8 grand and doing 140 mph at places like Silverstone or Snetterton was just brilliant. I'd do it but I can't get a racing licence cause of my disability.

Hello, jag lovers! I was thinking about purchasing my first jag and wanted to steer clear of models that are notorious for electrical problems. I've heard that since ford bought out jaguar, a lot of the electrical "bugs" have been worked out. Could anybody tell me when ford acquired jaguar (I'm thinking '95-'96). And what used models you would recommend from a reliability standpoint.

I just received a 1989 XJ6 Jaguar from a family member who owned it since '92. I drove it up here from Atlanta in 11 hours - what a wonderful machine! Best of all I found a mechanic who is also a Jag lover and will maintain it for me. I hope to learn more from your web site - Thanks.

One of the main attractions of Fast Metal is that it does not claim a wealth of information. Instead, it points visitors and members to the best places on the net to find the information they need.
